Function

Auxiliary power units, or APUs, are essential as they provide power when the primary engines are not going. They complete electrical power generation and conversion systems that give essential power in order to have safe plane operation.
But their role doesn’t stop there. In addition to being employed for money making purposes, APUs are also used for accessories for when the engines are not running. They give reliable power solutions for a variety of aircraft operations, like starting the engines, conditioning of the cabin and electrical power generation. Thanks to them, the cabin is made more comfortable while the clients get on board before the aircraft’s engines are started. Some APUs, connected to a hydraulic pump, permit the crew to use hydraulic equipment (such as flight flaps) before the start of the engine. This function can also be used as a backup in case of engine failure. The difference between aircrafts with or without APUs is that, with APUs, the places can also get power (be it pneumatic or electrical) from ground equipment when an APU cannot be used anymore.
Concerning turbine engines, those must be sped up to a high rotational speed as a way to provide sufficient air compression for self-sustaining operating. Tiny jet engines are commonly started by an electric motor, but larger ones rather use an air turbine motor. Prior to turning on the engines, the auxiliary power unit is launched, usually through a battery or hydraulic accu. Then, when the APU is running, it gives off power (electric, pneumatic, or hydraulic, following the design) to start the main engines.

Standard Airworthiness Certificate

Seeing that you absolutely NEED a standard airworthiness certificate to be able to use an aircraft in commercial operations, here’s what you absolutely need to know:
First of all, it’s the FAA that issues airworthiness certificates. And they can do it in the following cases:

      • When a registered owner or operator/agent registers an aircraft
      • When an applicant submits the application form to his local FAA office
      • When the FAA determines the aircraft is eligible and in a condition for safe operation

Always contact your local FAA servicing office to give you guidance and information in assisting you in meeting your airworthiness interests. This is the best thing to do once you’ve registered your aircraft.
Also make sure that you don’t need a special airworthiness certificate instead. If you’re operating an aircraft in one of the following categories, a simple certificate won’t suffice:
Restricted category type aircraft; aircraft used for personal use; multiple certifs; limited category type; kit-built places; experimental type aircrafts; provisional type categories.
